As you have undoubtedly noticed, our newsletter recently received a new look. However, what is inside has not changed: the latest information about printed electronics and PolyIC.

In our first article, you can read all about the transparent, conductive films which PolyIC first presented to the US market in May this year. Towards the end of this year, we will present this innovative film to the Asian market at the FPD international in Tokyo, Japan. The second article of our newsletter gives insight into touch sensors which are made feasible by the conductive films manufactured by PolyIC.

Review: Successful presentation of the transparent conductive films at the SID 2010 in Seattle
PolyIC presented the new transparent conductive film to a large audience at the SID 2010 in Seattle, the leading trade show for the electronic display industry.
Owing to their transparency and good conductivity while being extremely flexible, these films are an excellent alternative to the ITO films commonly used today. Therefore, our booth attracted numerous interested visitors, and we were able to establish contacts to renowned manufacturers of touch sensors and displays. PolyIC films are manufactured on polyester films using roll-to-roll processes. The roll exhibited at our booth gave visitors the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the sophisticated technology. Visitors were especially interested in the individual customer-specific layouts which can be realized easily and efficiently using the PolyIC film; this is a rather complex task for the ITO films. This is particularly important for the emerging industry of multi-touch sensors. Hence, it was not surprising that the touch sensor using our transparent conducting films, which we set up at the LOPEC-2010 conference, was a great success with the audience. Knowledge: What's the difference between a resistive and a capacitive touch sensor?
Resistive and capacitive touch sensors are the basis of modern, interactive input devices which are very easy to operate. Resistive touch sensors use the pressure an object exerts on an input medium to establish a connection between two transparent conductive layers. The exact XY position of a touch point on a surface can be calculated from this electrical contact using the voltage gradients applied on the films in X and Y direction.

Capacitive touch sensors already recognize the proximity of electrically conducting objects, but they can be regulated so that they have to be touched in order to switch. Pressure is not required here as opposed to the resistive technology. The surface of capacitive touch sensors is charged electrically. When touched, for instance, a connection to ground is established resulting in a small charge transport. This minimum current flow is measurable at the corners of the surfaces where the even voltage field is established. Variations in its intensity at the respective corners yield a specific touch point on the surface.

Touch sensors have become quite common especially in mobile phones, and the market is anticipated to continue growing considerably over the next years. This is where PolyIC's transparent conductive films present an excellent basis to replace the ITO films commonly used today. PolyIC films are perfectly qualified to meet the requirements of the strongly emerging multi-touch sensor industry thanks to their customizable layouts which can be realized during production without complex additional steps.

For the first time ever a public field test with more than 250 printed electronics Raffle Tickets was conducted. The field test was done by the demonstrator partners Leonhard Kurz, NTERA, Acreo, Felix Schoeller and PolyIC at Lope-C 2010.

The Raffle Tickets are a marketing application with an interactive smart object card. Technically, the Raffle Ticket consists of an antenna, a printed organic rectifier and a printed electrochromic display. An activator, which is similar to RFID readers, provides energy by transmitting radio-waves at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. The printed electronic rectifies these radio-waves and provides the printed display with energy and a predefined symbol will appear. After taking the Raffle Ticket out of the activation field, the symbol disappears in a short period of time and can be activated again. Advantages of this technology are that it is thin and flexible and can be easily integrated in cards or packaging (e.g. tickets, vouchers). For this reason it can be used for many applications such as marketing events, games or for brand protection and authenticity control.

Preview: FPD international in Japan
From 10 to 12 November 2010, PolyIC will have a booth in the "German Pavilion" at the 17th Flat Panel Display International (FPD 2010) in Japan. The exhibition site is Makuhari trade show in Tokyo. PolyIC will exhibit mainly transparent conductive films as ITO replacement in hall 4, booth 222.
